DIY Upholstered Fireplace Cushion

And now for a little home décor, with a baby focus.  I must admit that I am a nervous mother.  I imagine every single thing that can go wrong and worry about it.  Mostly I try to ignore the crazy, but there are a few things I just needed for peace of mind, and one of those was to protect my baby from our fireplace!  The hearth was hard bricks, and so tempting to climb on or run around.  I know I could have bought one of those fireplace edge covers, but I wanted to add a little seating as well.   So with the help of my Dad, who is an amazing carpenter, we built a cushion for the hearth!

Dad carefully measured the top and built a wooden frame just a bit bigger than the hearth so that after I added the padding it would be a tight fit.  Ours is 66” by 12 5/8”, and then there is a 1X2 on the front and sides to protect the corners.  Then I took batting, and cotton fabric and used the handy staple gun to upholster it.  It was easy!  And it’s very comfortable to sit on.  After a few months of fabric hunting I finally found the perfect fabric to match my living room, and now the cushion is perfect!

  1. So cute! How thick was the batting?

  2. Thanks! I actually used a two inch thick dense foam piece for the top and then extra loft batting that goes over the top and down the sides.

  3. Did you attach it in some way or does it sit on top? Does the 1x2 around the front and sides keep it in place?
It looks great and we plan to do the same.

  4. It has a 1X2 around 3 sides, and the fit is very snug, especially after adding the fabric. That way we could take it off if we needed to, but it's secure. I hope it works as well for you as it has us!

    1. We never use our fireplace, and if we did, the cushion comes right off! Easy peasy =) Thanks for visiting!

  6. Hi, how much fabric did you have to order?
    Thanks,

    1. I had to order a lot, because I didn't want to have to piece my fabric, and my fireplace was slightly longer than the width of the fabric. Two yards was enough for mine, but you need to measure yours and order about 15 inches extra so you have enough on the sides to wrap it. I used the extra for floor cushions.

  7. I am looking to do this as well...I am a little confused to how this was done...How did you attach the wooden piece to the fireplace to secure it?

    1. I didn't secure it to the fireplace. With the side pieces it fits snugly so it won't just slide off, but I wanted to be able to take it off.
